The Scottish Stem Cell Network (SSCN) was launched in 2003 initially as a pilot project with support from Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian. SSCN is currently funded by Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian, along with the European Regional Development Fund and generous support from our corporate sponsors Invitrogen, Millipore, Marks & Clerk and DLA Piper. Since its launch, the Network has grown from strength to strength and currently boasts over 1000 members.
The aim of the Network is to bring together scientists and clinicians in order to improve the rate at which laboratory research translates into therapeutic benefits for patients. We work with the entire stem cell community in Scotland, including academic institutions, clinical and industry-based research groups, as well as suppliers in the field. We provide a forum for discussion, learning and collaboration, which is critical for the development of this exciting new technology.
A major role of the Network is to provide international organisations with easy access to stem cell researchers in Scotland, to engage with the general public and inform open debate at home and abroad. This has been achieved through regular conferences and meetings, alongside our newsletter (SSCN News) which gets posted to the stem cell community, both in the UK and around the world. For more information on the work of SSCN, please download our brochure.
The Network continues to grow and remain innovative as the field of stem cell technology changes and grows. Plans for the coming year include several public outreach events, a roadshow to take SSCN to the members, an education roadshow, the ever popular Biology Group meetings and much more (please visit the ‘events’ section of the website for more information). This year has seen us overhaul our website, so keep checking back to see announcements of progress, plans for 2010 and more information.
